Summer hair routine: sweat + sun + swimming… How to protect your hair from dryness and breakage?

introduction

In the summer, hair is subjected to a lot of stress: strong sun, daily sweat, seawater or chlorine, and humidity . The result is often: dryness, frizz, breakage, and a change in hair texture.

The problem is not with summer itself… but with the lack of a “protection routine”.

In this article, I give you a clear plan before/after swimming, and a simple weekly routine that keeps hair smooth and noticeably reduces breakage.

Why does summer damage hair?

  1. Sunlight weakens hair and increases dryness
  2. Chlorine strips away natural oils and increases breakage.
  3. Seawater (salt) dries out hair and increases frizz.
  4. Sweat can cause itching and buildup on the scalp.
  5. Frequent and incorrect washing causes more dryness

Golden rules for summer

Do not allow sweat to accumulate on the scalp for too long

Protect your hair before swimming

Do not use hot water

Focus on moisturizing the ends

Reduce the heat (hair dryer/curling iron)

Before swimming: The most important step to protect your hair

Many people ignore it, but it makes a huge difference:

1) Wet your hair with plain water before entering the pool/sea

Hair “absorbs” the first thing, so if it absorbs clean water it absorbs less chlorine/salt.

2) Apply a light layer to the edges (optional)

  • A light conditioner or a very small amount of moisturizing product on the ends
  • Without applying heavy products to the scalp
